Early Pregnancy Loss: Why the Grief Can Feel Invisible

By Natasha Necati, BioMirco founder · Written from my own experience. Clinical facts checked against the NHS, Miscarriage UK and Tommy's.

The grief of early pregnancy loss is real, no matter how many weeks. Yet it is often treated as something small, something to get over quickly. It is not. This is for anyone whose loss felt invisible to the world around them.

Why is early pregnancy loss so often minimised?

Early Pregnancy Loss: Your Grief Is Real

Is your grief valid, even very early?

Yes. Grief is not measured in weeks (Miscarriage UK). You are allowed to mourn a pregnancy of six weeks as deeply as one of nineteen. Our own losses ranged from six weeks to nineteen weeks, when we held our son and had to say goodbye to him. Every single one of them mattered. Every one was a baby we wanted.

Is early loss finally being recognised?

Slowly, yes. In England, parents who lose a baby before 24 weeks can now request a baby loss certificate in recognition of their loss. It changes nothing about the pain. And yet it means everything to have your baby acknowledged as real.

Ways to honour your baby

There is no right or wrong way to remember. Some things that help many parents:

  • Choosing a name, if that feels right for you.
  • Keeping a small keepsake, a candle, or a special date.
  • Telling your story, when and if you are ready.

Even now, hearing the name we chose for our son can stop me in my tracks. That is not weakness. That is love that did not end.
